The Houston Texans will need to cull their roster down to 53 players by Saturday afternoon. On Sunday afternoon the team can start signing their practice squad players. It is tricky projecting the final week 1 roster as the Texans will stash a player or two on Reserve/Injured. Here is Texanscap’s projection:
Tom Savage, Deshaun Watson, Brandon Weeden
If the team really needs to free up a roster spot the team could move on from Weeden, but due to the injury history in the past at the position TexansCap is projecting the team to carry all three QB’s.
Lamar Miller, D’Onta Foreman, Tyler Ervin, Alfred Blue, Akeem Hunt, Jay Prosch
With Will Fuller still injured, the team will utilize Ervin and Hunt in the slot.
Wide Receiver (5):
DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Braxton Miller, Jaelen Strong, Bruce Ellington
Dres Anderson put together a strong camp; and if Fuller’s injury required a longer rehab he would have made the week 1 roster. Anderson is practice squad eligible but he might get claimed by another team. This will put the team at 3 wide receivers for week 1 due to Strong’s suspension.
Tight End (3):
C.J. Fiedorowicz, Ryan Griffin, Stephen Anderson
This position group was locked in when camp started.
Offensive Line (9):
Duane Brown, Xavier Sua’Filo, Nick Martin, Jeff Allen, Kendall Lamm, Breno Giacomini, Greg Mancz, Julian Davenport, David Quessenbery
Chris Clark is the odd man out. Mancz is a better Center than Guard but he can back up all three interior positions.
Defensive Line (5):
J.J. Watt, D.J. Reader, Christian Covington, Joel Heath, Carlos Watkins
Heath very well could take over at the defensive end starter sport over Covington at some point during the season.
Brian Cushing, Benardrick McKinney, JaDaveon Clowney, Whitney Mercilus, Zach Cunningham, Dylan Cole, Brian Peters, Brennan Scarlett, Ufomba Kamalu
Sio Moore is the odd man out, mainly due to being injured most of his time here. Kamalu’s camp and preseason work gets him the last spot.
Johnathan Joseph, Kareem Jackson, Kevin Johnson, Treston Decoud, Robert Nelson, Denzel Rice
Robert Nelson is definitely on the bubble, but Virgin is not ready to take the roster spot away just yet.
Andre Hal, Marcus Gilchrist, Corey Moore, Eddie Pleasant, K.J. Dillon
The team is looking to get faster on special teams and an extra safety helps in that area.
Special Teams (3):
Jon Weeks, Shane Lechler, Nick Novak
Novak beats Fairbairn again…but Novak is on a short leash. Kickoff coverage will need to be spectacular.
Practice Squad (10):
Kyle Fuller (OL), Odare Ogunbowale (RB), Dres Anderson (WR), Riley McCarron (WR), Gimel President (OLB), Eli Ankou (DL), Eric Lee (OLB), Dee Virgin (CB), Bryce Jones (CB), TBA (player not on current roster).
If Zach Conque is healthy enough to pass a team physical the team will attempt to sign him to the practice squad.
