The Texans used the cash roster bonus model on Griffin’s contract instead of using a signing bonus.  The roster bonus is paid and accounted for on the salary cap in year 1 of the contract.  By using this method the contract will not have any dead money in Year 2 & Year 3 if Griffin were to be traded or released after 2017.  Due to the available cap space for 2017 the contract was built to have a larger cap charge in the first year, versus the second and third year.
