The Houston Texans have released veteran safety Stevie Brown. Brown was brought in to compete at the safety position, but has not distinguished himself enough from the competition. The transaction will leave a $40,000 dead money charge for the salary cap from Brown’s signing bonus. It was clear that Stevie Brown was not going to make the 53 man roster. The team was gracious enough to release Brown now to allow him an opportunity to find employment elsewhere as soon as possible. Reportedly Brown has a workout scheduled for his former team the New York Giants.
This will put the team back to 90 contracts, 89 of them on the active roster. The team will likely wait until the roster cut down on September 1st before making another move. The transaction produced a $115,000 gain in team cap space.
