Per multiple reports the Houston Texans have given LB Whitney Mercilus a 4 year extension worth a reported $25 million. The extension includes a $5.25 million signing bonus and a total of $10.8 million in guaranteed money. On face value this looks like a $6.25 million per year extension with an extra $10.8 million in guaranteed money; but likely it is not. Mercilus was due $1.43 million in P5 salary for the 2015 season. It is very likely that this amount is included in the $10.8 million in guaranteed money. Mercilus was eligible for the 5th year option to be activated for a rate of $7.751 million. The two sides used this number as a baseline for guaranteed money to be included in an extension. Based on the new extension it appears Mercilus was able to get an additional $1.62 million in guaranteed money. Using the extension versus the option route equates to a substantially lower cap charge in 2016. The $5.25 million signing bonus will kick in this year spread out over the life of the contract. Assuming Mercilus’ ’15 P5 salary does not change, the cap charge for ’15 should only raise $1.05 million.
Summary: 4 year extension worth $25 million including $10.8 million guaranteed money.
